“Solder mask defined” (SMD) pad : The copper metal pad is larger than the solder mask opening above this pad. Thus the pad area is defined by the opening in the solder mask.
Non-Solder Mask Defined” (NSMD) pad: Around each copper metal pad there is solder mask clearance. Dimensions and tolerances of the solder mask clearance have to be specified to ensure that the solder pad is not overlapped by the solder mask.
Depending on the PCB manufacturer’s tolerances, 75 µm is a widely used value
