Hello,
They are actually quite different.
Besides clearing the timer run bit, the external stop can also be configured to flush the timer (timer continues to run afterwards) or both stop + flush.
External gating on the other hand is to suppress the timer count during the selected active level of the external event. The timer resumes its count from the previous paused value when the active level is exited.
