    Solenoid Driver IC

    Dear Team,

    We are looking for solenoid driver IC's for both PWM & ON/OFF type solenoids with operating voltage of 6-60V and current output of 2.5A in Transmission control units kindly suggest us the suitable IC.

    Also when we would like to know about the heat sink consideration for the DDPAK IC where datasheet suggest us to give PCB area of 76.2 x 114.3 x 1.5 mm copper area as a heat sink,

    where as our PCB size itself is 100x150x1.6mm in which we need to accommodate 11 no's DDPAK IC'S how to provide copper area in such cases. kindly provide solution for this

    Hi,

    Infineon's TLE family of solenoid drivers are suitable for driving solenoids. You can look at TLE9104SH for your application. This comes from our automotive portfolio and for further support you will have to contact local FAE.

    Which DDPAK IC are you looking at ? If PCB size is limited, you can look for alternate modes of heat sinking like top side cooling.

    Dear Srivatsa,

    We are planning to use BTN8982TA which is TO263 package, we want to use 11 No's BTN8982TA, so request you to suggest us how to take care of heat dissipation, since the enclosure is IP76 box.

    Girish,

    BTN8982TA can operate upto 40 V only. I'm not familiar with IP76 rating. Guessing you meant IP67, you can start with calculating the power loss in each device. I believe you wont be using the full 50 A current capability of the device.

    Based on the power dissipation nos. you can calculate the required heat sinking. For improving heat transfer:

    1. Increase the copper thickness and use multiple thermal vias on the device power-pad
    2. Increase the number of copper layers and stitch them with thermal vias
    3. Increase the via diameter
    4. Use large ground plane
    5. Use thermal conductive material on the top side to increase cooling area of the device to get the heat out to the surface

    Using FloTherm or similar software you can improvise the overall thermal design. Below application notes can help you:

    Thanks for your reply, Yes it is IP67, its typographical error.

    We require load current of 2.5A only per device
    and we will be turning ON only 3 drivers at a time out of 11 devices.

    Further this device is capable of driving 55A load, then how to configure for using only 2.5A load, and how to detect open load condition kindly explain
